FCBFF

FCBFF -- the Foot Controller's Best Friend Forever!

You can download FCBFF from the App store. It's a universal app for the iPad and iPhone.
The app is a programmer for the Behringer FCB1010 MIDI Foot Controller. It works with the stock Behringer firmware; it does not currently support the Uno mod chip, or other variations. If you are interested in having support for the other firmware versions, please contact us!

Connecting to the FCB 1010

To connect to the FCB 1010, you will need some sort of MIDI adapter. There are a number of different options; the Apple Camera Connection Kit has a USB interface, which you can use with an ordinary USB to MIDI cable. If you're a guitarist, there are a number of audio interfaces that also include MIDI -- FocusRite and Zoom have worked well for us. Connect your iOS device to the cable, and then the connector of the cable marked "input" to the "output" on the FCB, and vice versa.

Uploading from the FCB

To transfer the current settings of your FCB to the app, you will first need to put your FCB into configuration mode. The instructions on how to do this are included on the main display of the app when you select "upload."
  • Power off the FCB1010.
  • Hold the "DOWN" pedal, and turn the FCB1010 on.
  • Wait until "direct select" lights up; once it does, you can release the down pedal.
  • Pres the "UP" pedal twice; the global configuration section of the FCB should display "config."
  • Press pedal 6 (sysex send). This will transmit the FCB settings over MIDI. This app should capture the settings automatically, and will display an alert message letting you know this happened.

Downloading to the FCB

To transfer settings from the app to the FCB1010, you will need to place the FCB into configuration mode. The instructions on how to do this are included on the main display of the app when you select "download."

  • Press "download" on the main display of this app.
  • Power off the FCB1010.
  • Hold the "DOWN" pedal, and turn the FCB1010 on.

  • Press and hold the down button to exit configuration mode.

Using the App

You can save FCB configurations on your iOS device, and load them again later. Before making any major changes, we recommend capturing the current configuration. The file menu button gives you access to all the files, and you can import and export using AirDrop.

Configuring Individual Pedals

To configure an given pedal, first set the app to configuration mode by tapping gear icon on the upper right part of the screen. You can then select any bank, and then any pedal, and a dialog will appear where you can change the settings.
Tap any on-off switch to enable or disable a MIDI message, or tap the event types and values to change those. Changing the settings should be straight-forward.
When not in configuration mode, FCBFF performs basic emulation of the FCB1010, so you can test things out without downloading the configuration to the FCB1010. This also allows you to use presets when you don't have the FCB1010 with you.
The ten different MIDI channels available for the different events can be configured by tapping the "FCB MIDI" button. Select the event type, and then the MIDI channel for the event.

Expression Pedals

In addition to being able to trigger events with the pedals, FCBFF also emulates the expression pedals. When the app is not in configuration mode, the two sliders on the right of the screen will generate the appropriate MIDI events when touched.

Slide-Over and Side-By-Side

On the iPad, FCBFF supports slide-over; you can tap the three dots at the top of the screen, and have the app over the top of other running apps. If you are configuring a DAW, synthesizer, or guitar amp simulator, you can configure the pedals while also accessing the MIDI learn features of the other app. The videos on the Secret Base Design web site demonstrate this.

Bluetooth QWERTY Keyboard Support

FCBFF emulates the FCB1010, and you can use an ordinary Bluetooth keyboard as a wireless mini-pedalboard. Tap the `KBD' button on the top of the screen, and the app will watch for keystrokes from the keyboard. The number keys select different banks, while ASDFG and WERTY are the numbered pedals from 1 to 10. The right expression pedal is controlled by the row of keys starting with ZXCV. Hold down shift on that row, and you can control the other expression pedal.

Thanks!

Thanks for your support! Please let us know if you have questions or comments, and we hope you find FCBFF useful!
And also, a bit thanks to the great people at Wabbit Wanch, who make iFCB; this is an excellent Mac based FCB editor, and they provided lots of helpful guidance. Also, thanks to the nice folks in the FCB 1010 Yahoo news group, and the Facebook iPad Musician Page.
And also, thanks to Audeonic Apps, who make MIDI Bridge and MidiBus, and our good friends at Confusion Studios, who make MIDI Designer.
